Melanie Naidoo-Vermaak has taken on the chief sustainability officer role at multinational mining and metals processing group Sibanye-Stillwater, effective 1 January 2024.

On her LinkedIn profile, Melanie notes that her “ultimate career and life vision is to be able to create sustainable, meaningful value to society within my sphere of influence”.

She has over 20 years’ experience in sustainable development in both the private mining and public sectors in South Africa and globally, starting her career as an environmental co-ordinator at De Beers Consolidated Mines.

She has held management roles at DRD Gold, Mintek, BHP Billiton, Eskom and Anglo American before her most recent position as group executive manager responsible for Environmental Management, Sustainability and Social Impact at Harmony Gold. Melanie holds a BSc (Hons) and MSc in Sustainable Development and an MBA.

“Melanie’s appointment will further diversify and strengthen our senior leadership team. Sustainability/ESG is a strategic imperative for the Group and we look forward to Melanie making a positive contribution in our journey to be a force for good,” said Sibanye-Stillwater CEO, Neal Froneman.
