South Africans, who bank with FNB, can now calculate their monthly carbon emissions spend, carbon emissions score and access a handy carbon coach to assist with improving that score through the financial services provider’s app.
The bank’s data and analytics expertise and international best-practice carbon-factor methodologies are used to estimate a monthly carbon-emissions score based on a customer’s transactional spend data.
In his LinkedIn post on the launch, Kival Singh, sustainability lead for FNB’s personal and private segments, said, “Education on this topic is so crucial! The environmental and social impacts resulting from climate change affects developing countries the most. Creating awareness is the first step, behavioural change in our daily activities comes next and slowly we get this wheel turning to making positive change.”

- Practical ways to reduce a individual’s carbon footprint;
- A peer comparison model, so individuals can benchmark their carbon footprint against others; and
- Ways to donate to carbon offsetting causes using cash or eBucks to improve a customer’s carbon-emissions score.
“By providing customers with the ability to monitor their carbon footprint and offering practical guidance on how to reduce it, we’re effectively empowering the average citizen to contribute to the global agenda to resist climate change,” said Sizwe Nxedlana, CEO of FNB’s private segment.
According to FNB, the app generates in excess of 1.2 billion logins annually.
